Customer feedback pushed us to build an entirely new product instead of a feature

Post original

A few weeks ago, right after NCAA bracket season ended, we started getting a surprising wave of support tickets. People weren't asking us to improve our bracket maker. They were asking for something completely different. The feedback was basically: "Brackets are great, but not every tournament fits a bracket." Users mainly wanted to run World Cup pools, Wimbledon predictions, and live tournaments without manually updating scores or standings. Everything needed to be automatic. Everything needed to update live. And ideally, it had to work from a mobile phone. The awkward part? They were right. We had spent years building one of the leading online bracket platforms, but these requests exposed a gap we hadn't really solved. At first, we thought this would be another feature request. It wasn't. The more customer conversations we had, the more we realized people weren't asking for better brackets. They were asking for a completely different way to run and participate in sports competitions which is way far from a build from scratch canvas we have. So we made a risky decision: Build a new product from scratch. For weeks, we were juggling support, customer interviews, product validation, design, development, and the constant pressure of keeping our existing platform running. The hardest part wasn't building it. It was figuring out what users actually wanted. Every customer described a slightly different use case. Office prediction contests. World Cup pools. Wimbledon pools. Fan communities. Private competitions among friends. Eventually patterns emerged. We built around those patterns. The result became Trofeo Live ( https://trofeo.live ) — a platform for creating and managing live sports pools and tournament competitions with automatic scoring, real-time updates, and mobile-first management. Somehow, against all odds, we managed to get it out the door almost on schedule. The whole experience taught us something interesting: Customers rarely ask for the thing they actually need. They ask for a feature, but if you keep digging, sometimes they're describing an entirely new product. Has anyone else had a customer request evolve into a completely separate product or business? What was the original request, and what did it turn into? submitted by /u/TotallyNormally [link] [comments]
