I'm an engineer with zero marketing skills. Here's the exact playbook I use to get customers — no ads, no agency, no budget.

I spent months convinced I couldn't do marketing. I'm a builder. I write code, not copy. The whole thing felt foreign. Then I stopped trying to market like a marketer and started doing it like an engineer. Simple inputs, repeatable outputs, no fluff. Here's the exact playbook. Four steps. Nothing fancy. And if you're just starting out — this is enough to get your first 50 customers without spending a single dollar. Step 1 — Go where your customers already are Before you build anything, before you post anything, find where your people hang out. Facebook groups. Reddit communities. Slack channels. Discord servers. LinkedIn niches. There are communities for everything and your exact customer is already in them having conversations right now. Join as many as you can find. Don't lurk. Show up consistently, answer questions genuinely, share things that are actually useful. No pitching, no product mentions, just value. Two things happen when you do this. You build real credibility with the exact people you want as customers. And you start hearing the same problems over and over — which tells you exactly what to build and how to talk about it. Step 2 — Build a free tool around your product This is the engineer's unfair advantage. Pick the most common problem you keep seeing in those communities. Build a small free tool that solves it. No signup required, no strings attached, just instant value. Then quietly link to your actual product underneath it. But here's the part most people miss — free tools are SEO machines. Every tool you ship is a page Google can index. People don't just search for products, they search for solutions. "Free email finder." "Quick invoice generator." "Simple keyword checker." If your free tool shows up for those searches you're getting in front of your exact customer at the exact moment they have the problem. No content strategy. No backlink building. No SEO agency. Just a useful tool sitting on the internet doing the work while you sleep. The people landing on it are already your target user. They're not browsing — they have a problem right now and they're trying to solve it. That's the warmest traffic you can get without paying for it. And unlike a blog post you'll never finish, a tool compounds. It gets discovered, gets shared, gets linked to. One weekend of building can pay you back in traffic for years. Step 3 — Create simple content and post it consistently You don't need to be a writer. You don't need to be a content creator. Take the insights you're picking up from those communities — the real problems, the common frustrations, the questions nobody's answering well — and turn them into simple posts. Use AI to help shape them if writing isn't your thing. Keep it honest, keep it useful, keep it short. You don't need to go viral. You just need to show up enough that when someone in your niche sees your name they already trust you a little. Step 4 — Put your product in front of people who are already looking Reddit. Product Hunt. Hacker News. Indie Hackers. These are full of people actively searching for tools to solve problems. Post honestly. Share what you built, who it's for, what problem it solves. No hype, no inflated claims. Engineers hate being sold to so don't sell — just show. If the product genuinely solves a real problem and you've spent time in step one understanding what that problem actually feels like — people will see the value themselves. You don't have to convince anyone. You just have to be in the right place when they're looking. That's it Be where your customers are. Build something free that helps them. Show up with useful content. Put your product where people are already looking. This isn't a growth hack. It's not a scaling strategy. It's just enough to get your first 50 customers — and it costs nothing but time. No ads. No cold outreach. No marketing degree required. Just an engineer who figured out that the best marketing is already what we do — solving problems and shipping things that work. submitted by /u/buildingwithashrith [link] [comments]
