Fellow rewards optimizers — long post but I think you'll find this interesting. The "rewards left on table" problem Most of us know theoretically which card is best for which category. But in practice: - We forget in the moment - We don't know when we've hit monthly caps - We have too many cards to keep track of mentally I started calculating my missed rewards and built a tool around it. Here's the logic: For every transaction you make, there's an "optimal card" — the card in your wallet that would have given maximum rewards for that exact spend. The gap between what you earned and what you could have earned = rewards left on the table. Example from my last month: Merchant | Spent | Card Used | Earned | Best Card | Could've Earned | Missed Swiggy |₹3,200 |HDFC Regalia |₹32 |Axis Ace |₹160 |₹128 MakeMyTrip |₹18,000 |SBI Card |₹180 |HDFC Regalia |₹720 |₹540 BigBasket |₹4,500 |Axis Ace |₹45 |ICICI Amazon |₹225 |₹180 BPCL |₹6,000 |HDFC Regalia |₹60 |SBI Card |₹300 |₹240 Total missed last month: ₹1,088 Over a year that's potentially ₹13,000 in rewards I left behind — while owning the cards that would have captured them. The cap problem makes this worse: Reward caps reset monthly. If you're not tracking them: - You might use your "best card" for a category after the cap is already hit - That spend earns 0% instead of 5% - You didn't even know What I built: CardVault — tracks all this automatically. The key features for rewards nerds: → Real-time cap tracking per card per category → "Switch card" alert when cap is hit → Statement PDF upload → AI categorizes every transaction → calculates exact missed rewards → Monthly report: earned vs potential vs missed, broken down by card and category → Smart Spender: type in your spend amount + category → ranked list of your cards by reward value for that exact spend (cap-aware) Currently in beta, web app. The thing I'm most proud of: The AI doesn't just tell you what to do going forward. It analyzes your past statement and tells you: "If you'd used Axis Ace instead of HDFC Regalia for dining last month, you'd have earned ₹568 more." Retroactive intelligence. Because the data is already there in your statement. Happy to discuss the rewards optimization logic — this sub probably has strong opinions on which cards pair well together. What's your current setup for tracking reward caps? submitted by /u/Effective-House-4260 [link] [comments]
